Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease is the degeneration of the spine that occurs naturally as a patient ages, which basically means the spinal discs that act as shock absorbers begin to disintegrate. This condition causes herniated discs, bulging discs, spinal stenosis, and osteoarthritis. Dr. Pete Lazarnick “Dr. Pete,” located in Carrollton, Georgia, will work with you to relieve painful symptoms.

The symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease depend on each patient and the severity of their case. Some patients might not experience any pain at all. When pain is experienced, however, it is often found at the site of the irritated disc. The nerves within this area are compressed, traveling to other areas of the body to cause pain. Common areas are the arms and legs, although some patients experience numbness and tingling in their extremities as well. The main cause of Degenerative Disc Disease is age. As we grow older, our spines naturally begin to wear and tear due to continual use. Other factors that add to degeneration are obesity, smoking, repeated physical work, and injury.

Treatment for Degenerative Disc Disease depends on the severity of the patient's symptoms. Hot or cold packs are often recommended, along with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. When the disease causes herniated or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, or osteoarthritis, other forms of treatment are offered. This includes personalized physical therapy, designed and agreed upon by you and our staff.
