Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

When you think of chiropractic, you may think of the people who help with back problems. We do provide assistance to people with back pain at the Carrollton chiropractic office of Dr. Peter Lazarnick (Dr. Pete), but we’re actually much more than that. As experts in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, we provide holistic treatments, realigning any swollen joints in the body for optimal health. After lower back and neck pain, one of the most common musculoskeletal problems is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and like them, it implicates the nerves, as well.

The carpal tunnel is a hollow space in our wrists that nerves and tendons pass through. The nerves to our arms originate from our necks, and after bundling together in the shoulder, they split so that one goes to the thumb and first three fingers and another goes to the pinky. The carpal tunnel is tightly packed even at the best of times, and since its walls are largely composed of bones, it’s not very elastic. However, tissues within or surrounding it, such as the synovial tissues that lubricate joints and tendons, can become swollen for a variety of reasons. When this happens, compression of the nerves could result in tingling, numbness, or pain along their length.

Although Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can result from an acute injury, it is usually a degenerative condition. Many people develop it because they work jobs that require them to maintain postures that stress their shoulders and wrists, such as when seated at a desk. We offer several means of reducing pressure on the carpal tunnel, including therapeutic exercises to increase the surrounding tissues’ strength and flexibility, and heat therapy to initially loosen them up. But to reduce Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the long-term, we also provide instructions on healthy posture.
