Hamstring Injury

In order for your lower back and hips to be aligned, the muscles and bones below them have to be in good condition, too. At the Carrollton chiropractic office of Dr. Peter Lazarnick (Dr. Pete), we believe in treating muscle fatigue and injury without dangerous drugs or unnecessary surgeries. We offer several therapies for soft tissues, including those of the thigh. But in order to seek treatment, patients first have to understand that hamstring injuries are serious, so we thought we’d describe a bit about them.

The hamstrings don’t connect directly to the lower back, but they are counted among the muscles of the hip. They connect to the bottom of the pelvis and run along the back of the thigh to just below the knee. They are used to bend the knee and move the leg backwards. Athletes and dancers can easily overuse their hamstrings, particularly if they have to stop and start from sprints regularly. When a hamstring is injured, it will often cause a sharp sting in the back of the thigh, and that leg won’t be able to support as much weight, throwing the hips off-balance.

In the short term, a hamstring injury may be treated with a compression bandage as part of the Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation protocol for sports injuries. But in order to recover in the long-term, a patient will have to rebuild its strength and flexibility, and while it’s immobile, it’s continuing to atrophy. Even if surgery is necessary, an injured hamstring will have to undergo physical therapy afterward. In addition to advising on stretching and strengthening exercises, we can assist with work-out recovery by providing electric muscle stimulation and soft tissue positioning. Keeping the hamstrings strong and balanced with the quadricep muscles in the front of the thigh will also reduce the risk of future injury.
