Pain in the Tailbone

The spinal column plays a crucial role in whole-body health, but it can still have localized problems. One of those is pain in the tailbone. Also known as coccydynia, tailbone pain is a particularly inconvenient form of musculoskeletal dysfunction, but one that can almost always be treated without surgery. At the Carrollton chiropractic office of Dr. Peter Lazarnick (Dr. Pete), we work with patients to develop individualized care plans for pain relief and a return to normal activity.

The tailbone, also known as the coccyx, is the lowest part of the spine. It hangs below the sacrum, which is the part that connects to the top of the pelvis, and it anchors deep muscles in the pelvic region. Pain in the coccyx is rarely due to a fracture; more often, it’s caused by bruising to the surrounding soft tissues. It is more common in women and can sometimes be traced to an acute injury or overuse, as in people who do a lot of bicycling or horseback riding, and tends to be worse when the patient is seated. Coccydynia may be related to a dislocated tailbone which either became dislocated during an injury or is naturally curved too far to one side.

Chiropractic adjustments can realign a dislocated tailbone, and we offer several complementary pain relief treatments that are non-addictive and non-invasive. Those include stretching exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles so they can better protect the tailbone and applying heat therapy to the lower back. People with tailbone pain may also want to try sitting on specialized ring-shaped pillows. Patients will need to avoid activities that put pressure on the tailbone for a while, but they usually make full recoveries and can reduce their risk of pain in the future by diversifying their exercise.
