Reasons for Lower Back Pain

Back pain is something that many adults deal with. Sometimes the reason for lower back pain is obvious, but in other cases, it isn't. No matter what the reason, finding a way to reduce or do away with the pain is of primary concern. In Carrollton, GA, you can turn to Dr. Peter Lazarnick "Dr. Pete" to provide a variety of the latest therapies and treatments for lower back pain.

The back supports the body and, as such, it is vulnerable to wear and tear. Many people abuse their back and the result is back pain. But it isn't always obvious what exactly caused the back pain, but some things certainly contribute to it, such as carrying extra weight, not having any core strength, and lifting things incorrectly.

Disc compression

One of the most common causes of lower back pain is problems with the discs. All the discs are susceptible to becoming compressed, but it is most common in the lumbar region. There are degrees of disc compression from herniated, to ruptured. A disc can be slipped or bulging, but if the nerve is compressed pain is a potential result. Many things can cause this condition, from a fall or accident to simple aging.

Arthritis

Arthritis in the spine can happen to both adults and children. In adults, it is often a result of the aging process. The condition is called spondylarthropathies and is made up of different types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis can lead to bone spurs on the spine, irritating nerves when the joints in the back move. This form of arthritis is a result of wear and tear. Psoriatic arthritis can cause two or more joints to fuse together in the spine, resulting in lower back pain.

Spinal stenosis is usually seen in cases of osteoarthritis. The spinal column narrows putting pressure on the nerves which leads to pain, numbness, and even bowel issues.

Spondylolisthesis

This is a condition where one vertebra is out of alignment with the one next to it. This results in pain. It can be caused by aging, but it can also be caused by certain sports such as football or gymnastics. It is more common in women than in men and, in some cases, there may be a genetic predisposition to this condition.

There are many reasons for lower back pain and getting an accurate diagnosis is important so that the correct therapy and treatment can be recommended.
