Risk Factors for Herniated Discs

Your spine is protected by a series of soft tissue discs that are located between each vertebra. The discs also help to hold the vertebrae in alignment. If you put too much pressure on your spine, you risk herniating one or more discs. Dr. Pete Lazarnick provides treatment for your herniated disc at our Carrollton, GA, chiropractic office.

Aging

As we get older, our bodies have fewer of the key substances needed to maintain a good musculoskeletal system, including our spinal discs. The outer shell of the discs is made of cartilage which gradually breaks down with age. The cartilage may become too weak to stay in place. Another contributing factor that is associated with aging is that we tend to be less active. As a result, the muscles in our back don’t work as well to hold the spine in place, which may lead to herniated discs.

Being Overweight

Carrying extra pounds puts pressure on your spinal column. Eventually, the discs may not be able to withstand the extra pressure, and one or more discs may bulge out into the spinal column. Maintaining a healthy weight protects your spine and reduces the risk of developing herniated discs.

History of Disc Herniation

If you have a history of herniated discs, you are at higher risk of developing herniated discs in the future. Even if your symptoms subside, the injured disc is more prone to herniation. Dr. Pete offers guidance on ways that you can protect your spine and prevent recurring herniated discs.

Sitting and Standing for Long Periods

Believe it or not, sitting and standing for long periods increases your risk of herniated discs. These activities put pressure on your ligaments, muscles, and joints. Over time, the pressure pulls at your spine and may result in herniated discs. Dr. Pete recommends that you take occasional breaks to stretch your back and neck. If you are sitting for a long period, stand up and walk around for a few minutes. If you are standing for a long period, sit down for about 15 minutes every hour.

Poor Posture and Body Mechanics

Poor posture and body mechanics put a strain on your spine, and this may lead to herniated discs. Check your posture throughout the day. When you meet with Dr. Pete for your herniated disc treatment at our Carrollton, GA, chiropractic office, he shows you how to improve your posture and body mechanics to reduce the risk of herniating a disc.
