Ergonomics to Avoid Back Pain While Driving

Driving is one of many causes of back pain and muscle tension. Dr. Pete Lazarnick “Dr. Pete” in Carrollton, GA can help make your trips more comfortable with ergonomics and customized treatment.

5 Tips to Prevent Back Pain While Driving

Many people have become more aware that sitting for long periods at work can induce back pain and have taken steps to rectify it. However, many people do not think about sitting in a vehicle and how much back pain that can cause.

The good news, though, is that whether you’re in the car for a few minutes a day or heading out on a long road trip, there are some ergonomics you can put in place to prevent back pain while driving. Below, Dr. Pete in Carrollton, GA shares some of the best tips to put in place.

1. Get comfortable before you ever put your car in drive. Make sure your back pockets are empty – sitting on a wallet or other object can make you sit unevenly. Wearing thick jackets can also impact your alignment. So make sure that you and your seat are void of any obstructions.

2. Adjust your seat as needed. You should not have to stretch or lean to drive. Your seat should be close enough to the steering wheel that your arms can sit at a 90-degree angle as you drive. It should also be high enough that you can easily see over it and through your windshield, but your feet should easily reach the pedals. Additionally, the headrest should be in line with the middle of your head.

3. Use proper posture. You should sit up straight with your shoulders rolled back. You can always use a lumbar cushion to help support your lower back while you drive. And if you feel your shoulders or neck tensing, take a break, roll your shoulders back and down, and let the headrest do its intended job.

4. Make regular stops. If you’re driving for more than an hour at a time, it’s a good idea to schedule breaks. Get out of your car, stretch, walk around for a few minutes, and then reset to proper posture. If you’re traveling with another licensed driver, take turns behind the wheel.

5. Take some heat therapy with you. You can invest in a portable heating pad or some heat therapy patches to apply to your back if you feel discomfort setting in.
