Pain in the Sacroiliac Joint

The sacroiliac joint is just one of many areas that can cause pain in the lower back. Fortunately, Dr. Peter Lazarnick in Carrollton and West GA can provide you with safe, non-invasive, and natural treatment methods for pain relief.

What Is the Sacroiliac Joint?

Your body has several joints that are necessary for proper movement and function. One of these is the sacroiliac joint. It sits between the tailbone and the lower back.

This joint – also referred to as the “SI joint” – is responsible for keeping the sacrum and the hip bones connected. It also absorbs any shock that occurs between your pelvis and upper body when you move.

The sacroiliac joint is surrounded by ligaments and several muscles, including the piriformis and the gluteus maximus. These tissues help support the joint and minimize shock.

When this area is damaged, inflamed, or otherwise affected, it can create the following symptoms and more:

  • Hip pain (Though the issue is not in the hip, it can often feel like hip pain.)
  • Pain in the joint when you try to lean back or lie down on your front
  • Feeling a tight sensation around the joint
  • Pain in one or both legs

For many people, the symptoms can often be confused with those due to a herniated disc.

Causes of Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Two of the most common causes of pain in the sacroiliac joint include being sedentary or being extremely active. Other causes include:

  • Injuries, such as those sustained during a vehicle accident
  • Pregnancy or being overweight, as the joint has to support more weight than it’s designed to
  • Inflammatory issues, like arthritis
  • Structural issues, like spinal misalignment
