How Could Sitting Hurt Your Back?

Back pain is a very common complaint. It can be caused by many things, but the question is, how could sitting hurt your back? This and many other questions can be addressed by Dr. Pete Lazarnick in Carrollton, GA. His chiropractic practice treats many different back conditions.

Many people spend their entire day in a seated position. Working at a desk all day that is not ergonomic, can lead to a variety of issues including back pain. It is important that you be aware of just how hard this position is on your back and neck. Getting up to walk around frequently is a must to keep your back as happy as possible.

It isn't just office workers and those who sit at work who need to worry. Sitting for only two hours can cause your lumbar back to ache and pain can travel as far as the neck.

Lack of support

It is very important that your chair has lumbar support. Without it, your back muscles and discs take up most of the stress. You may tend to slouch over the course of a day and this adds pressure to the ligaments in the back. Your chair is much more important to the health of your back than you may realize. If you are spending a great deal of time at home sitting, using a recliner is not a bad option. The reclined position is better for your back as long as you have some lumbar support.

Back stress

If you spend extended periods of time sitting in a chair, even one with lumbar support, the natural tendency is to arch forward to relieve stress on the lower back. You are adding an extreme amount of stress to the lumbar discs, and they may begin to bulge. This can lead to the muscles tightening up to protect the discs from further damage, but the muscles may spasm and the counterbalancing muscles will be overstretched.

Avoiding prolonged sitting is the best option for keeping your back happy and pain free. But if you are suffering from back pain that you think is caused by too much sitting, your chiropractor can help.
